Questions for OceansWatch applicants

In addition to the normal information that one would expect in a Resume (send this in too please, if you have not already done so) please answer the following questions. We need these questions answered because of the nature of the work that may be required and also because of the living conditions and other unusual circumstances that you may find yourself in. Please answer in detail and use as much space as you need to.

  • If you are doing your preparation in New Zealand prior to joining an expedition, accommodation costs at Chris and Julia’s place (where the office is) is NZ$50 per week in a shared self-catered cottage or a “sleep-out”. Are you happy with that arrangement and can you afford it?
  • OceansWatch is a charity, registered in the USA and New Zealand. We currently have very limited funds, however we are always working hard to get some.  The situation (December 2010) is that all volunteers are asked to pay a donation of NZ$200pw for the anticipated time you will spend on the expedition.  Are you happy to pay your donation in advance for the expedition?
  •  We need Crew/Interns to work with us getting the trip organised and the yachts prepared. For Divers ~1 month prior to expedition commencement is appropriate, for Scientists, skippers and engineers ~2 months. This would usually be in New Zealand. When are you available from?

  14. Can you cook well, wash up by hand and do housework? (You will be living on a yacht and expected to share all chores proficiently).

  16. What leadership roles have you undertaken?
  17. What Marine Science studies have you undertaken?
  18. What Oceanography studies have you undertaken?
  19. What Environmental Science studies have you undertaken?
  20. What studies have you undertaken in areas of socio-economic aid, development, international politics or other areas that might be relevant?

  22. What sailing qualifications do you hold?
  23. Have you ever been seasick? If so how do you cope and how do you treat it?
  24. What personal growth (I.E. about your self, e.g. Landmark Education) courses have you undertaken?

  27. Have you lived in long term close proximity with others such as on long expeditions and how did you get on?

  33. What is your height and weight? (yes, we know that it’s not very PC to ask but it’s hard to manage on a small yacht if you are very overweight, there can also be cultural issues too).
